Our Walks

On the first Saturday of each month we'll be organising a tree-related activity, even if it's as simple and enjoyable as going for an afternoon walk.

Looking at the trees of Haringey is the first step towards getting more trees, improving the range of species, and protecting those we already have. Have you got a location to suggest for one of our walks? It could be an ancient woodland, a park full of exotics, or perhaps you've just got some particularly interesting street or front garden trees that deserve a bit of admiration or protection? E-mail web@ttfh.org.uk

Caveat

This is an informal social event - No organisation, No leadership, No insurance, No power-walking. No booking. Just fun.

Wear appropriate clothes and perhaps bring a flask. Maybe in the warmer weather we might finish off with a picnic!

Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Tree Trust. Though of course for the derisory sum of £5 a year, it's hard to find a reason not to join...!

Here are some of the things we did in 2009

Here's a list of possible locations

For more information about them, try [haringey council: greenspaces] and [wikipedia].
Here's a map (it's ok but we'd like to hear of a better one): [map of haringey parks and open spaces].

One of 'informal walks' was on Saturday 6 June 2009 in the Downhills Park and Downhills Way areas

The aim is to see examples of damage caused by the mismanagement of trees growing in grassed areas "so that the message can be carried far and wide". Over the years, the Tree Trust has made numerous representations to the Council to improve matters, but damage continues. In addition, we hope to see the iris nursery on the allotments, and several sites in passing. Do join us, and see the issues for yourself! Meet at 2pm at the north-west corner of the park at the junction of Belmont Road and Downhills Park Road.

For those of you who don't know this part of Haringey, the nearest tube, with many buses, is Turnpike Lane.

The arrow on the map shows the meeting point.

Another one of our 'informal walks' was to the grounds of St Ann's Hospital, which have a lot of unique trees

St Ann's Road, Tottenham, N15 3TH [map]

David Bevan says:
"The most interesting tree in St Anne's Hospital grounds is the true service tree (Sorbus domestica). There are several mature trees - all growing close to the perimeter road. They flower in early May - and bear copious "sorbs" in October (like small red and green "apples"). They have given rise to several "self-sown" seedlings in the adjacent hedges, and the two at Railway Fields originated from here.
I also remember a fine "medlar-thorn", X Crataemespilus grandiflora, which I have not seen elsewhere."
