What you can do for trees
Know the law
Many of Haringey's best trees are protected legally - with big penalties - not only from felling but also from pruning without first obtaining permission from the Council. The protection comes in two forms:
- Tree Preservation Orders can apply to trees in front or back gardens of houses, or on any other privately owned land.
- Tree is in a Conservation Area which means all trees are automatically protected, and any works need permission.
The exceptions are trees in the pavements or in public parks and spaces which are managed by the Council. If you see work being done to these by official contractors, it is nearly always approved. But if you are worried a nearby property owner may be taking the law into his own hands, do check.
Checking: If you want to check that work to any tree has permission, you should phone the Council's Tree officers on 020 8489 5656 or 020 8489 5631.
Consider taking photos of anyone doing work where you have worries about permission, and record contractor's vehicles registration numbers.
Planting
If you have a garden or allotment, then consider if you have room for one or more trees. The Tree Trust have a leaflet specifically about species for gardens in urban areas such as Haringey.
Maintenance
If you already have trees in your garden, then find out how to look after them properly.
Care
The thing that EVERYONE can do is to help care for the trees we already have in our borough by being alert to problems, knowing how to take action when necessary, and campaigning for more trees to be planted so that the many mature trees on our streets have successors for the future.

What trees do for us
Imagine Haringey without trees!
- It is no coincidence that some of the most attractive areas of the borough are the parts where the people who built the streets put in trees.
- Trees can screen and soften less attractive features in our urban environment.
- Trees provide shade in playgrounds.
- Mature trees can improve air quality and contribute to our wildlife resource.
- Just the sight of trees can produce a calming effect and help to reduce stress.
- And trees do all this while using just a small area of pavement.
